First, it was a conspiracy theory that chemicals in the water were turning frogs gay — we can thank Alex Jones for that one. Now, if one subreddit is to be believed, the gay chemicals have moved up the food chain and are targeting humans.

Posting in r/LSD, one user ventured the question, “Is there a batch of gay acid going around? Nothing against it, but I swear every day I see another post about ‘I took acid now I’m gay’ or ‘acid turned me gay.’ What’s going on?”

Indeed, a search through the subreddit brings up several posts from people wondering why they’re suddenly having gay thoughts while tripping. One person was panicking because the person they dropped acid with “suddenly turned gay” and started flirting with them; commenters pointed out that the guy was probably just not out rather than having experienced a sexuality conversion via LSD.

Across the subreddits’ various posts about the question of LSD “turning” people gay, the consensus seems to be that acid surfaces things we might be suppressing, or makes us question truths we believed about ourselves. One commenter shared their own experience, writing, “Yeah, I think being hetero isn’t as normal as people make it seem. A lot of us never question it, and psychedelics make us question things. It seems like a natural time to realize. I don’t think I accepted I was bi until I started using shrooms.”

Essentially, since psychedelics open your mind up to the wonders of the universe, for many people, that can include the question of sexuality. In other words, as another commenter put it, “Acid just pulls all the skeletons out of the closet, whether it be gay thoughts or anything else.”

So, no, it doesn’t look like anyone is sneaking gay chemicals into people’s tabs. What a shame.
